Ferry crossing

Dodaj do planera
Połęcko is best known for its ferry crossing. The wealth that the vicinity of the Oder brought to the local people more often than not came at a steep price. On of the first mentions of the danger of flooding of Połęcko dates back to 1709 when the Oder broke through the dykes and destroyed the winter crops. The flood happened again in 1713. Flood water destroyed or spoiled feed which caused illness of the cattle. Moving around was very difficult and sometimes, like on the night of 27 August 1786 when the water took the farm buildings with the animals still inside. The massive amounts of sand and debris brought by the river changed the local landscape, turning it into a almost a desert like in June 1804. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Połęcko hosted the so-called Schifferschulen, i.e. sailing schools. The course took 2 years to complete. During the 10-week winter sessions, students learned among others the rules of trading correspondence, an essential skill for overseas business operations.
