The village of Leine was first mentioned in 1248 as the knighthood fief of a family that came from Brunswick at the Leine river. Today, the village’s name is Linie, but there is still some confusion as to whether the name is singular or plural - a puzzle for the linguists to solve. In the 1920s, Leine was a popular destination for Polish immigrant workers looking for employment on the local farms.
