In June 2011, at the ponds in Kalety, the parish priest in Miotek, Fr. Antoni Swadźba consecrated the figure of Saint John of Nepomuk.
According to church tradition, it protects against flooding. It is also related to the biography of John of Nepomuk. In 1393, after the Czech monarch's conflict with the Prague archbishop, he was imprisoned by King Wenceslaus IV, and then thrown from the Charles Bridge into the Vltava River, in which Nepomuk was drowned. The faithful of the Catholic Church believe that Nepomuk, as the saint is usually called, protects against flooding crops and meadows. That is why the figures of the clergyman were often placed near bridges, rivers and lakes. Saint John of Nepomuk is especially revered in Bohemia and Silesia. It is in these lands that most of his figures are found.
The figure of the saint stands exactly at Stawowa street in the Zielona district, near the closed bridge, which was damaged by the flood in 2010. Fortunately, the water in the ponds and the Mała Panew River did not destroy the embankments. If this happened, a large part of the houses in Kalety could be flooded.
The sculpture was funded by donations from the parish of St. Francis in Kalety-Miotek.
