In the Kochanowice commune, in the Lasy nad Górną Liswarta Landscape Park, there are two natural sites worth seeing. One of them is the ecological site Brzoza, the main part of which is the pond of the same name. The second natural attraction is the site of the Katawbian Rhododendron. Both of these places can be seen using the seven-kilometer long nature trail.
The Birch Pond is a valuable object both in terms of nature and history. The water reservoir which is now overgrowing, together with the adjacent wet meadows, is protected as an ecological land with an area of 40 ha. The pond is of artificial origin. It was established in the years 1923-25, as one of several breeding ponds established on the initiative of Count Ludwik von Ballestrem. A few years later, a hunting lodge (non-existent) and a wooden church (moved to the village of Pawełki) were built on its shore. Currently, the place of the church is commemorated by a chapel. The flora of the Birch pond is interesting. Protected species occur here, such as the white water lily, marsh colon, yellow water lily, floating salvinia. The animals living in this area include, among others tree frog, natterjack toad, black cormorant, common redshank, kingfisher and otter.
Another interesting natural feature in the area is the site of the 100-year-old Katawbia rhododendron, a shrub native to North America. This position is protected as a natural monument and covers an area of 46 ares. Like the Birch pond, the latter object is also not of natural origin. It is worth visiting this place during the flowering of rhododendrons, that is in May and June. A viewing platform was built to admire the variegated, lilac-pink, purple or purple flowers.
