The origins of the church in Brzesko date back to late 12th century. The temple was most likely built as a result of the missionary work of St Otto of Bamberg. The church was built with cut granite and ordinary boulders, but its original form was lost in multiple reconstructions. The bell tower that you can see today was built in the years 1815-1857 in Romantic Gothic Revival style according to the design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The most valuable element of the church’s interior decorations is the nearly 150 cm high wooden Gothic statue of Madonna and Child from the early 15th century, serving as the centrepiece of the altar. The church also has a unique stalactite vaulting, “a masterpiece of woodcraft”, created by a local folk artist.
